We travelled across Europe for 18 days and visited 6 cities in 6 eastern European countries. What surprised us was how affordable most of these cities were compared to western and southern Europe. In terms of the cost of travelling, there were days when travel costs in eastern Europe were comparable to those in South East Asia. Our almost 3 weeks eastern Europe itinerary comprised of Bratislava (Slovakia), Budapest (Hungary), Krakow (Poland), Berlin (Germany), Prague (Czech Republic) and Vienna (Austria). We know that not every country we visited is part of eastern Europe. But since most of them were, we would like to call it our eastern Europe travel.

Even though all the countries we visited are a part of the European Union, many don’t use Euro as their official currency. In Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic you’ll have to use their local currencies. This keeps everyday living expenses in these countries low.

In 60 Euros a day budget in Europe you can comfortably spend 2 – 3 weeks in eastern European countries. This cost includes:
- your accommodation at central locations in either AirBnBs or private rooms in hostels or mid-range hotels
- sightseeing and attractions
- food
- nightlife
- daily travel within the city
- travel between cities
- a little bit of shopping
Our travel to eastern Europe began in India. So additionally we spent on our return flight tickets from India to Vienna and Schengen visa. This made our overall cost of travelling to Europe from India, 90 Euros per person per day. For our almost 3 weeks in Europe itinerary, we spent approximately INR 2.50 lakhs for two adults (exchange rate when we did the trip was approximately 1 Euro = INR 77.5). This price is inclusive of shopping and duty-free purchases. A similar 3 weeks eastern Europe itinerary for 2 adults organised by a travel agent would easily cost more than INR 4 lakhs.
